Dan Rauchwerk on Alive with Clive

An avid reader with a passion for history and the lessons it provides, Dan incorporates his vast knowledge of historical events and perspicacious sense of humor to craft songs that awaken us to the value provided by the history some of us never learned and others have already forgotten.

It’s thus most fitting for him to be known as a “musical Wikipedia.”

The oldest of three siblings, Dan has been singing and writing songs since he was 5 years old, and began to learn how to play the clarinet in 3rd grade when he was 10.

With his brother, Noah, he formed The Lords of Lichtenstein, a folk band that performed shows in the U.S. and toured internationally.

Recently, though, with the release in December 2018 of his debut album, We Are More Than What We Leave Behind, Dan has embarked on a solo music career.

Dan Rauchwerk on Alive with Clive, 1st of 2 Shows

  • “Mrs. McLaughlin” is a song that conveys the belief of a mother that her son’s allegiance to her and her family ought to take precedence over her son’s desire to join the army to fight in wars with questionable agendas;
  • “Memphis” is a song about leaving a stifling relationship to experience a sense of freedom and become fully self-expressed;
  • “It Just Is” reflects observations about the arbitrariness of life and death as a result of thoughts generated by walks through a cemetery; and
  • “Till It’s Over” is about how it’s only by proceeding through life that we can ascertain whether or not the outcomes we seek occur.

“In every lonely mountain valley
There grows a hidden four-leaf clover
Things will get better or they wont
It’s arbitrary
But we have no way of knowing till it’s over”
~ from “Till It’s Over”

In the 2nd Show:

Dan Rauchwerk on Alive with Clive, 2nd of 2 Shows

  • “Skywalker” is a song that pays tribute to the brave construction workers who decades ago climbed to the heights necessary to build skyscrapers that adorn the Manhattan skyline;
  • “Tears Shaped Like Islands” gives a sense of the emotional upheaval for people in Hawaii caused by the incorporation of Hawaii into the United States;
  • “Carthage” is a song to remind us to benefit from the lessons provided by the past as we make plans for the future; and
  • In “Modern-Day Explorer,” the explorations of historical icons, Vasco Da Gama, Christopher Columbus and Ponce de Leon, are contrasted with modern-day life and future explorations some are pursuing in this day and age.

“Skywalker, from your lofty iron perch
You watched the world go by
Way down here on earth
You made New York City rise
As a mighty eagle soars
You built a glorious future
But that future was not yours”
~ from “Skywalker
