Agitating for a Paradigm Shift: “You Never Told Me” by Cassandra Kubinski

In “You Never Told Me” — (scroll down for the Official Music Video) — it’s almost like Cassandra Kubinski is channeling the sentiment expressed by Steve Jobs in this video clip:

Here’s the transcript:

When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life. Have fun. Save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact. And that is everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it. You can influence it. You can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.

At this juncture, it’s also appropriate to remember the script created for Apple Computer in 1997 by the Los Angeles office of advertising agency, TBWA\Chiat\Day, for its famous “Think Different” advertising campaign:

Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They invent. They imagine. They heal.
They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

And this Blog post would be incomplete without inclusion of this quote from Steve Jobs too:

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

In the Official Music Video for “You Never Told Me,” Cassandra takes this concept one step further, in that with just one brief uplifting glance from her she is able to cause the people she encounters to cast off inhibitions and take courageous actions in their lives in fulfillment of their deepest aspirations:

Lyrics to 'You Never Told Me' by Cassandra Kubinski

”You Never Told Me” | Cassandra Kubinski

Wait your turn
Stand in line
There’s an order
There’s a time
Read the notes on the page
Practice every single day
Don’t talk back
Don’t say no
Listen and do what you’re told
This is how I learned to follow, follow, follow
Follow, follow

Yeah, you told me how to stay good
How to stay safe
How to stay tame
But, surprise, it’s all a game

And you never told me that the rules are made up
And the world is run by the ones who made them
You never told me, you never told me

You never explained I should learn the rules
Only to know the right way to break them
But life showed me, yeah it showed me
Yeah it showed me, yeah, all you never told me

You’re gonna hurt your voice with a belt like that
You gotta save your cash, never be in debt
Turn your feet off, suck it in
Eat your veggies, be thin
Men are pigs, girls are mean
Choose your options carefully
Take what you’re given
Say thank you
And stop askin and askin
They’re never gonna give it to you
This is how I learned to lose
I’ve been thinking it through and I really can’t blame you

But you never told me that the rules are made up
And the world is run by the ones who made them
You never told me, you never told me

You never explained I should learn the rules
Only to know the right way to break them
But life showed me, yeah it showed me
Yeah it showed me, yeah, all you never told me

How long will I feel like I’m at the start?
I need to relearn how to heal my heart
And trust that vision for the life that I’m living
’til I see me winning again and again and again

Cos you didn’t tell me go and chase that dream
And I know how much you still believe

But you never told me that the rules are made up
And the world is run by the ones who made them
You never told me, you never told me
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
You never explained I should learn the rules
Just to know the right way to break them
But life showed me, yeah it showed me
Yeah it showed me, yeah, all you never told me
